Increasingly, boaters of all types are venturing onto the European Inland Waterways either chartering/hiring a boat on the continent, or entering the systems from the sea through one of the many large sea locks.

In most European countries it is necessary to hold an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) endorsed for Inland Waterways. This is achieved by taking the CEVNI test on the European Inland Waterways Regulations.

If you did not take the CEVNI test when you did the practical test, the endorsement to your ICC for inland waterways can be added at any time by taking the CEVNI test online.

A practice is available, which will help you to check if you are ready for the real test. It’s up to you
if you try this, and your scores will not be recorded.

The real test is split into two parts

- Part 1: signs and buoyage,

- Part 2: sound signals, lights and shapes.

Fifteen questions are asked in each part, and you must answer at least eleven questions correctly in each part to pass the whole test. When you have done that, you can download a certificate that can be used when you apply to the RYA to have your ICC endorsed for Inland Waterways.

You will have two attempts to pass each part of test. If you are unsuccessful you can re-enrol at a later date for another two attempts (when you have done your homework!).

Questions are displayed in random order from a large question bank

The multiple choice answers are displayed in a random order.

Each question has a time limit, set to be long enough to allow for slow computers and slow
readers, but not long enough to flick through the book!

You can take the CEVNI test online through Walton Training for a fee of £20. To buy an online test: click here

As soon as your payment is processed, you will receive an enrolment key and instructions by email giving you immediate access to the test and practice tests (24/7).

We can also provide a short training course to explain the regulations before your test for a total cost, including test, of £75
